A three-way transfer tussle is unfolding as Arsenal have made a late and aggressive push to sign highly-rated 17-year-old striker Will Wright from Salford City — a player Liverpool had been leading the race for.
Wright, a 6ft 3in Preston-born forward, enjoyed a breakout season last year, scoring over 50 goals across Salford’s youth and reserve teams.
The Reds had been in advanced talks with Salford and hoped to wrap up the deal swiftly after tracking the teenager for several months.
However, Arsenal have now moved decisively.
According to the Irish Sun (16 July), the Gunners submitted a significantly improved package worth over £250,000 upfront, with add-ons potentially taking the fee above £500,000.

Salford City, owned by Manchester United’s Class of ’92 figures including David Beckham and Gary Neville, have not yet agreed a deal, but Arsenal are now considered favourites.
Spurs view the striker as a long-term option who could initially bolster their U21 squad, with a view to progressing into the senior team — particularly amid uncertainty around Richarlison’s future.
Wright is currently in the second year of his scholarship at Salford, having been discovered playing for Euxton Villa and AFC Fylde just two years ago.
His rapid rise from grassroots football to FA Cup appearances and elite interest underlines his remarkable potential.
As things stand, Arsenal are pushing hard to finalise an agreement in the coming days, while Liverpool must act swiftly if they hope to keep one of England’s brightest young talents from slipping through their fingers.
